Affinity Groups
O’Melveny is committed to attracting, retaining, and promoting lawyers and staff of all backgrounds. Our dedication is reflected in one of our most successful diversity initiatives—supporting voluntary Diversity Affinity Groups for lawyers and staff.
Diversity Affinity Groups are made up of people who share common personal characteristics such as gender, ethnic background, sexual orientation, race, or other “protected” status. They gather for social events and professional development activities that provide forums for sharing common insights, experiences, and perspectives; create mentoring opportunities; help boost morale; and, ultimately, foster a stronger sense of community within the Firm.
Affinity Groups emerge and function organically within the Firm as voluntary associations organized and directed by their members. The Firm provides meeting space and funding for approved activities.
Within three years of announcing support for the formation of Diversity Affinity Groups, employees have established 24 groups in O’Melveny offices around the globe, where they organize local networking, mentoring, community outreach, recruiting, and career-building events. Recent Affinity Group-sponsored events have included panels with alumni, clients, and business leaders, and discussions on topics including work/life effectiveness, professional development, business development, communication skills, and leadership challenges and opportunities.
