O'Melveny NY Participates in Legal Outreach's Summer Internship Program

O’Melveny’s New York office participated in Legal Outreach’s Summer Internship Program for the first time in 2007, hosting two high school students.

Working with the New York City Department of Education, Legal Outreach partners with a variety of legal institutions to provide law-related education programs to more than 2,600 students in high schools throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

Motivated tenth grade students from under-served communities participate in a series of four-day internships at law firms and companies, getting exposure to multiple firms, various professional practices, and legal professionals who can support their aspirations to pursue higher education and professional careers. Every participating student is also enrolled in “College Bound,” Legal Outreach’s multifaceted college preparatory program.

As a participating firm, O’Melveny provided an internship experience for two students who will be sophomores this fall. O’Melveny was the fifth and final New York law firm at which the students interned this summer.

During their time at O’Melveny, the two students assisted associates Terry Lin and Barry Junker with an asylum case, conducting legal and media research and presenting their findings to a panel of counsels and associates. The interns also met with attorneys and other legal professionals to discuss the Firm's various departments; pro bono work; and the college application process.

They learned about private equity and leveraged buyouts, and participated in a mock meeting with a bank. The interns also took a tour of the New York branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, and observed a proceeding in New York State Supreme Court. “O’Melveny & Myers LLP was the highlight of my summer," one student wrote.

O’Melveny’s participation in the program was organized by the New York Asian Attorneys Affinity Group and the New York Black Legal Professionals Affinity Group. Phil Isom was the sponsoring partner. The program was coordinated by associates Leticia Smith-Evans and Anya Allen.

Also participating in various aspects of the program were staff Robert Alfarone, Mary-Lynne Bancone, Heidi Bliss, Natalia Dorfman, Joanne Fazzari, Christina Frontin, Michael Montalto, and Linda Schulze; managing attorney Keith Whitman; counsels Florence Beauboeuf, Maria Kim, Jerri Shick, and Michelle Toy; and associates Deepa Ambekar, Sheila Fitzpatrick, Alex Fong, Khelia Johnson, Anh LyJordan, and Justin Siegel.
