Path to Partnership

O'Melveny is committed to openness about the partnership process.  Every year, the Chair of the Partner Admissions Committee and the Director of Professional Development visit each office to discuss the path to partnership, including how partnership admission decisions are made at the office and practice-group level.  These "path to partnership" meetings cover issues such as partnership criteria, the timeline for candidate submissions and the decision making process, the similarities and differences between income and equity partnership and how the Firm helps new partners make the transition from counsel status to partner. Follow up questions after the meetings are encouraged and any question—before or after—may be submitted anonymously. In addition to the local office meetings held annually, the path to partnership is a topic frequently featured on the agendas of our global training retreats.

Professional Development for Partners

The O'Melveny & Myers Leadership Institute
The O'Melveny & Myers Leadership Institute is a custom leadership development immersion program developed jointly by the Firm and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Leadership, in its many forms, is a core O'Melveny value, and one that we uphold through our commitment to cultivating leaders who are well equipped to meet challenges and embrace new opportunities. We help the Firm's current and emerging leaders acquire and hone the leadership skills critical to their success. In support of this overarching goal, we conceived a formal leadership training academy that would provide leadership and strategic business education of the highest caliber.

To realize that vision, the Firm engaged Kellogg, a renowned educational institution with established success in executive education and leadership training, to help us create the Institute. We worked closely with Kellogg to develop the Institute's custom curriculum, which is tailored to the business of law and the Firm's unique priorities, structure, culture, and values.

Institute participants spend a week on the Northwestern University campus in Evanston, Illinois exploring strategic management principles used by many of the world's leading enterprises. The program consists of executive-level training sessions led by distinguished Kellogg faculty, supplemented by group discussions and action planning sessions.

We realize we are not the only law firm professing to offer challenging work, professional development, and a collegial environment.  Beyond the apparent similarities lies what truly defines a firm—the professional and personal experience it offers.
