O'MELVENY WINS "COMPETITION TEAM OF THE YEAR" AWARD
BRUSSELS, February 11, 2008 - O'Melveny & Myers LLP has been recognized as "Competition Team of the Year" by Legal Business Awards 2008. O'Melveny was recognized for its innovative representation of TUI AG in its acquisition of First Choice Holidays PLC, forming the leading travel group worldwide. John Cook, of counsel in the Brussels and London office, led the O’Melveny & Myers LLP winning team.
"We are very honored to receive this award," said John Cook. "This recognition is a tangible example of the strength of our European Antitrust and Competition Practice and confirms our position amongst the best competition practices in Europe."
According to Legal Business, this case was particularly unique because “Contrary to market perception and the beliefs of many involved in the deal, Cook succeeded in convincing the European Commission that only a Phase I investigation was necessary to clear the First Choice/TUI merger, rather than a lengthy and costly Phase II inquiry.”
The other firms short-listed for Competition Team of the Year were: Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and Slaughter and May, Denton Wilde Sapte, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Peters & Peters.
“This award is a well-deserved recognition of John's exceptional work which has characterized his entire career,” said Riccardo Celli, head of the European Antitrust and Competition Practice. “It represents the pinnacle of a tremendously successful year for our competition practice.”
