How We Work & Grow
We want O’Melveny to be the law firm where everyone wants to join and grow because they know they will be valued, have the opportunity to do great work, and ultimately craft a career that works for them. Here’s how we're striving to be that firm.
Employee Networks
O’Melveny is proud to have more than 30 Employee Network Groups focused on a variety of life experiences, such as gender, orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, or being a parent or first generation lawyer. Our Employee Networks contribute to the diversity and inclusion dialogue at O’Melveny by leading seminars and other awareness-raising events, organizing pro bono clinics and other community-building efforts, assisting with on-campus recruiting, providing career-readiness support like mock-interview clinics, finding opportunities to gather and connect (book club, anyone?), and more.
Working Flexibly with CustOMMize
To meet the shifting needs of our legal talent, O'Melveny has developed CustOMMize, a comprehensive suite of flexible work options that support the ability to work remotely, establish a reduced schedule, or take a sabbatical. To enhance CustOMMize, we offer several layers of support for working parents. These include paid parental leave, back-up child and family care benefits, a workplace lactation program, and expert coaching services, including specific support for leave transitions.
Embracing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Values Day
Each year on Embracing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Values Day, we celebrate the critical importance of diversity and inclusion to our core values. Each of our 18 offices marks the day by organizing its own slate of events, presentations, and team activities tailored to issues central to its community. Recent themes for our Embracing Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Values Day have included empathy and compassion, respectful dialog, and belonging.
Pro Bono
Through pro bono service to underrepresented individuals and communities, O'Melveny underscores its commitment to diversity and inclusion. In 2021, O'Melveny lawyers devoted nearly 70,000 hours to pro bono matters. Providing our pro bono clients with access to justice makes a difference for the rights of women, immigrants, veterans, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others.
Work Coordination
Associates and counsel take charge of their careers by finding assignments through a centralized staffing team, partner work advisors, or their own efforts. The staffing team and work advisors strive to provide associates and counsel with work that meets development needs while meeting client needs, and that provides access to an array of work and supervising partners.
Learning and Mentoring
The firm offers an array of thought-provoking educational programs that raise awareness of various DE&I issues and foster inclusion. These include speakers, workshops, sponsorships of external opportunities, and multi-day training academies that have included a Women's Leadership Academy and Diversity Equity & Inclusion Leadership Academy. O'Melveny also offers an internal career coach and a range of mentoring opportunities to support integration, retention, and development.
