Daily Journal: “Top Gun” Lawsuit Won’t Fly, Paramount Responds

August 30, 2022

Paramount filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit claiming that “Top Gun: Maverick” infringed on the copyright of an article that inspired the original “Top Gun” movie. “[T]hat article — which plaintiffs tellingly do not attach to the complaint — is a nonfiction piece on the Navy Fighter Weapons School,” wrote Molly M. Lens, who represents Paramount. “Plaintiffs do not have a monopoly over works about ‘Top Gun.’” A hearing is scheduled for Sept. 26 before US District Judge Percy Anderson. Paramount is represented by Lens, Daniel M. Petrocelli, and Kendall Turner of O’Melveny & Myers LLP.
