TechRepublic: The Ransomware Risk Management Calculus is Changing for OT, ICS and Critical Infrastructure

O’Melveny counsel John Dermody spoke with TechRepublic regarding the detrimental impact of ransomware attacks, which constitute not only a financial problem limited to technology but also a disturbing threat to our physical reality when vital infrastructures, operational technology (OT), and industrial control systems (ICS) are targeted; a serious issue requiring government focus and resulting penalties.

“The government’s appetite for imposing mandatory cybersecurity requirements has increased, and it is unlikely that government regulatory efforts will be limited to just that critical infrastructure subsector,” Dermody told TechRepublic, referencing the TSA’s pipeline security directive issued in the wake of the Colonial Pipeline hack. “The government is not going to tolerate a scenario where there are potential cascading effects.” 

“Whether through new regulatory requirements or through new legislation on the Hill, it is likely that more teeth are coming to government cybersecurity requirements,” he added.
