The Philadelphia Inquirer: Landmark Pa. School Funding Case Decided: The State’s System is Unconstitutional

A ruling handed down yesterday by Commonwealth Court Judge Renee Cohn Jubelirer found that Pennsylvania schools do not have adequate resources to educate all students and that the state's public education funding system is unconstitutional. The long-awaited decision follows a landmark lawsuit that concluded last year and consolidated a seven-year process into a four-month trial. The petitioners, which included advocacy groups, several parents, and six school districts, sued the state over claims that the current public school funding model is inequitable and violates Pennsylvania’s constitution. Jubelirer “makes it clear that what the state is obligated to provide is a meaningful opportunity for every student to succeed academically, socially and civically,” said Katrina Robson, an attorney for the plaintiffs.
