FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN FRANCISCO—October 7, 2020—O’Melveny partners Darin Snyder and David Almeling have been named among the Daily Journal’s 2020 “Top Trade Secrets Lawyers.” The list features the top 26 lawyers practicing trade secrets law in California.

“An experienced practitioner noted for his expertise in advising technology sector clients on complex trade secret and patent disputes, Snyder is also co-head of O'Melveny's diversity and inclusion initiative and a member of its executive and policy committees,” the Daily Journal observed in its profile of Snyder. The publication hailed his work for Semtech Corp., including a complex case against a startup begun by former Semtech employees, as well as his pro bono successes.

“The trials postponed by COVID created time to let me represent three kids from El Salvador who entered the US by themselves and were in detention," Snyder told the Daily Journal. “We got the government to agree to release them to their dad's custody. The prospect that they'd be sent back to El Salvador where their lives had been threatened was unacceptable. Now, we're fighting to keep them in the US.”

The Daily Journal recognized Almeling for the book that he and Snyder authored on trade secret law, and for Almeling’s “wide-ranging overview of the [trade secret] field to House Judiciary Committee members in 2018, stressing the increased threats to trade secrets and praising the then-two-year-old Defend Trade Secrets Act.”

As the Daily Journal noted, Almeling leveraged California's Uniform Trade Secrets Act to secure a $22.5 million settlement in the case of a former scientist for client Agilent Technologies Inc., a Santa Clara-based Hewlett-Packard spinoff that makes high-tech analytical instruments and software.

“This was hard-fought litigation,” Almeling told the Daily Journal, adding that before the settlement, the case involved 96 fact and expert depositions, 27 expert reports and 42 disputes briefed to a discovery referee. “It was a good result for our client.”
