Law360 Names O’Melveny One of 2021’s Insurance Groups of the Year

NEW YORK—February 2, 2022—Law360 has named O’Melveny’s Insurance practice a 2021 “Practice Group of the Year” in the publication’s annual awards competition.
The winning practice groups were selected from nearly 900 submissions by law firms across the country. The special report honors “the attorney teams behind litigation wins and major deals that resonated throughout the legal industry this past year.”
In praising O’Melveny, Law360 highlighted the firm’s representation of Chubb in pandemic coverage—including a US$137 million win over the Los Angeles Lakers—in insurance suits, and in the Boy Scouts of America bankruptcy. The publication singled out O’Melveny’s work challenging misleading advertisements by plaintiff law firms soliciting potential claimants in the Boy Scouts case.
“No one’s had a series of cases like that with national implications for the industry across the board,” O’Melveny insurance practice Chair Tancred Schiavoni said. “Whatever success we have flows from team work.”
In August, a California federal judge rejected the Lakers’ claim for almost $90 million in alleged property damage and $47 million in business-interruption losses due to COVID.
"I'm a Lakers fan, but their policy insures property, not what they were seeking," said Rich Goetz, Co-Chair of O'Melveny's litigation department. "It has to be tied to direct physical loss, direct physical damage, and that's not what is alleged here."
Law360 also highlighted O’Melveny’s multimillion dollar win for Chubb’s Century Indemnity Co. against Berkshire Hathaway unit Utica Mutual Insurance Co., and O’Melveny’s representation of AIG units in Imery’s talc bankruptcy.
