O’Melveny Gives Paid Day Off to Volunteer

LOS ANGELES—June 13, 2017—For O’Melveny, community service has never been an afterthought. Our founders started the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles in 1929, and partner Warren Christopher made being a good world citizen one of the three overarching values of the firm—along with excellence and leadership.

Taking that one step further, O’Melveny has launched a new program called “Giving Back,” which allows all eligible employees to take one paid day off every year to volunteer with a qualifying nonprofit organization on a cause important to them. The program is effective July 1, 2017. This is on top of the efforts that O’Melveny lawyers and staff already do through office-specific Community Involvement Committees, which identify causes and opportunities to give back with other members of the firm.

“O’Melveny’s commitment to our communities provides opportunities for each of us to make a difference, both locally and globally,” said George C. Demos, chief operating officer of O’Melveny. “Giving Back is consistent with O’Melveny’s values and is inclusive of all the ways we give back, including legal services, volunteerism, and sponsorships.”

O’Melveny is one of only a few large law firms to have a dedicated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, which unifies the firm’s community involvement programs, scholarships and mentorships, veteran initiatives, charitable giving, sustainability efforts, and pro bono legal work.

“So many of our corporate clients have these wonderful, dedicated CSR programs that make a real difference in their communities and for their employees,” said Rochelle Karr, director of O’Melveny’s CSR program. “We saw an opportunity to build on the values that O’Melveny holds at its core by patterning our CSR program after our clients’ and working with them on shared causes.”
