Zujkowski Named a “Rising Star” by the New York Law Journal

August 9, 2021

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK—August 9, 2021—The New York Law Journal has named partner Joe Zujkowski to its 2021  “Rising Stars” list, which recognizes “the region’s most promising lawyers 40 and younger.” In announcing the news, the publication noted that this competitive contest was judged by an outside panel of experts.

Zujkowski’s multiple accomplishments set him apart from other young lawyers. Over the past year, he originated and led two of the largest creditor mandates since the start of the global pandemic—Belk Inc. and Bruin Energy—in addition to representing both debtors and creditors in several complex out-of-court restructurings.

Most recently, Joe represented the ad hoc group of Belk term lenders in a deal supported by all major lender groups to consensually restructure through a one-day prepackaged chapter 11 filing. During the height of the pandemic in 2020, Joe represented the ad hoc group of senior noteholders in the restructuring of Bruin Energy, which completed a successful prepackaged chapter 11 cases in the Southern District of Texas, and Isagenix in a complex out-of-court deal with its credit agreement lenders.

Zujkoswski also works closely with John Rapisardi, Chair of the Firm’s Global Restructuring Practice, on O’Melveny’s representation of the Government of Puerto Rico in the largest and most complex municipal restructuring in US history. With over US$70 billion of funded debt and approximately US$50 billion of pension obligations, Puerto Rico is facing a severe fiscal crisis exacerbated by a lack of access to capital markets, a contracting economy, and, more recently, the destruction and humanitarian issues caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The O’Melveny team represents all of the Puerto Rico governmental entities in need of financial restructuring under both Title III and Title VI of the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA), which provides for both in-court and out-of-court restructuring paths similar to the US Bankruptcy Code.
