Training Programme

    • Our programme is tailored to help  expand your legal knowledge, practice skills and business acumen
    • We offer a variety of workshops, seminars and case studies to help you succeed and develop skills in areas that include presenting and networking
    • As a trainee, you will have the opportunity to contribute to internal and external legal briefings and to attend external courses and presentations that are of particular interest to you
    • Regular and structured feedback and mentoring is provided throughout the course of your training
    • We place great importance on training lawyers at all levels and are committed to continuing development beyond the training contract

Training Contracts

    • As a trainee you will generally experience four six-month seats split over our core international transactions and litigation practices
    • O’Melveny trainees are also regularly seconded overseas to our offices in Hong Kong and Brussels
    • You will work in a very supportive, inclusive and diverse environment where a designated training partner, along with allocated supervisors, will provide you with regular formal and informal feedback
    • As a trainee you are also allocated a mentor who will support you throughout your training contract and into your career post qualification

Salary and Benefits

    • First-year trainee salary (2016) – £44,000;  Second-year trainee salary (2016) – £48,000; NQ – Competitive
    • Once a candidate has been offered and has accepted a training contract with us, the Firm will sponsor all future GDL/LPC tuition fees, as well as provide a maintenance grant of £8,000 (2016).

Vacation Schemes

    • Work for one week within practice groups alongside associates
    • Get a hands-on understanding of the work lawyers do and an insight into how our business operates 
    • Tackle assignments set and assessed by associates 
    • Attend formal training sessions and workshops
    • Receive ongoing support and feedback and have many opportunities to talk to associates, counsel and partners on an informal basis at organised social events

Applications

    • Successful candidates need to have proven academic ability, heading for a 2:1 or above, excellent communication skills, a commitment to teamwork, the ability to carry real responsibility from the outset, sound commercial awareness and an appreciation of the context in which we and our clients operate
    • We welcome applications from both law and non-law students, as well as from graduates in different stages of studies or career levels
    • If you are a law undergraduate studying at a UK university, you may apply during or after your penultimate year.  If you are a non-law graduate, you may apply during or after your final year

Interview Process – Training Contract and Vacation Scheme

    • We encourage anyone applying to us for a training contract to also apply for the vacation scheme
    • Interviews take the same form for both comprised of an interview with two partners, one of whom will be the graduate recruitment partner, a presentation to two attorneys (which we ask you to prepare in advance) and an independent online aptitude test
