American Lawyer: Shout-Out: O’Melveny Wins Freedom for Pro Bono Client

December 04, 2018

A pro bono team from O’Melveny, including partner Jonathan Hacker, counsel Brad Garcia, and associates Brian Quinn and Jessica Waddle, secured the release of Stoney Lester, a man sentenced to almost 22 years for the intent to sell crack cocaine.

Lester was designated a “career offender” under then-mandatory sentencing guidelines that have subsequently been changed at the US Supreme Court level and in the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. The O’Melveny team was appointed by the Fourth Circuit to represent Lester on appeal. Garcia successfully argued before the unanimous panel.
