FORTUNE: Pro-Trump rioters could face up to 20 years in prison

O’Melveny counsel John Dermody is quoted in this article, which discussed the possible charges facing the pro-Trump rioters who stormed the capital.
Although Dermody said “the riots were extraordinary, and the attack on the Capitol was shocking and not business as usual in D.C. by any measure,” he doesn’t anticipate that prosecutors will use the Sedition Act. He told the publication that “more conventional charges that could act as a deterrent for others to commit similar crimes, without having to deal with the politics that would come from charging them with seditious conspiracy,” are more likely.
Dermody formally served as a deputy legal advisor at the National Security Council (NSC) and in the General Counsel’s office of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
