LA Daily News: Alexander - The Women of Angel City FC Have a Plan, and They Have Time

December 24, 2020

It has now been more than half a year since O’Melveny Sports Industry Group co-chair Chuck Baker and counsel Eric Geffner guided Angel City in securing a Los Angeles-based franchise in the National Women’s Soccer League.

“I don’t think it was that difficult a sell” to the league, Geffner said of the female-led ownership group. “I think there were other groups (interested in an NWSL team) and rumblings at other times. But this group of women, and then bringing Alexis, they just had advanced the plan and the vision far enough along that when they had that initial conversation, it was really a no-brainer for the league.”

Baker also assisted the Charlotte Major League Soccer expansion team, which was initially set to launch in 2021 but will similarly have an extra year to plan. “The time you would think would be a challenge, maintaining interest and developing a following,” Baker said. “On the other hand, given COVID, given game-day issues, now it’s given the Angel City folks an opportunity to think a bit more clearly about how to build momentum and how to develop a real following.”
