Law360 Imagines O’Melveny the Movie

August 19, 2016

In its August 19, 2016, edition, Law360, inspired by “The Last Days of Night,” a new novel and soon-to-be film in which lawyer Paul Cravath (his firm would one day come to be known as Cravath, Swaine & Moore) plays an important role, looks at other moments in law firm history “ripe for the Hollywood treatment.”

The round-up includes firm founder Henry O’Melveny’s groundbreaking representation of William Kerckhoff, a lumber magnate who had the idea of harnessing the power of the nearby San Gabriel River and turning it into hydroelectric current that could power Los Angeles. As Law360 noted, O’Melveny would later recall the moment the massive undertaking came to fruition, saying, “The hopes, the fears, the perplexities and the labor of seven years were crystallized in that second of time.”
