Though Congress was unable to pass autonomous vehicle (AV) legislation by the end of 2018, some 29 states now have AV laws. Despite the lack of federal legislation, Melody Drummond Hansen, chair of O’Melveny’s Automated & Connected Vehicles Industry Group, believes innovation is inevitable. “AV technology is proven and it is ready to go,” Drummond Hansen said. However, “safety remains a perennial topic for companies, regulators and the public. AV innovators will have to craft consumer messages to accurately reflect the capabilities and limitations of AV, and offer guidance on how users can contribute to safety,” she said.
