Law360: Media & Entertainment Group Of The Year: O’Melveny

February 06, 2020

O’Melveny was named the 2019 “Media & Entertainment Group of the Year” by Law360. O’Melveny was cited for securing wins for AT&T in its US$85.4 billion purchase of Time Warner and 21st Century Fox Inc. in its US$128 million reduction on a US$179 million arbitration award.

“The D.C. Circuit’s ruling effectively brought an end to a hard-fought litigation process that began after the DOJ challenged the merger in November 2017, the first time in decades that the federal government had fought in court a ‘vertical’ tie-up between companies,” chair of O’Melveny’s trial practice Dan Petrocelli said of AT&T and Time Warner’s merger.

Bruce Tobey, who co-chairs the firm’s media and entertainment practice, told Law360 he expects the entertainment practice to continue to be busy. “The demand for high-quality, original content, particularly for streaming platforms, as well as traditional television, is going to be greater than ever,” he said. “That’s going to create a lot of interesting opportunities for outside financing to come in to either fully or partially underwrite these companies. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
