Franny Forsman, a retired federal public defender who challenged the state of Nevada over disparities in legal representation alongside O’Melveny and the ACLU of Nevada, was interviewed for the IndyMatters podcast.

Forsman discussed the resulting class-action settlement, which will ensure poor criminal defendants in rural Nevada counties receive adequate legal representation.

The lawsuits originated when a local public defender realized small rural counties hired outside lawyers were to take an unlimited number of cases for a single flat fee, which created the incentive for a lawyer to turn around each case as quickly as possible rather than explore all legal options available to a client, The Nevada Independent reported.
