New York Law Journal Profiles Raij, “Sports Deal Vet” Turned Team Owner

May 10, 2018

O’Melveny partner Irwin Raij was the subject of a profile in the May 10, 2018, issue of the New York Law Journal. Titled, “Big Law Sports Deal Vet From NY Takes a Turn as Team Owner,” the article explored Raij’s other identity as co-owner of the Major League Soccer expansion franchise the Los Angeles Football Club, which recently had its debut at the new Bank of America Stadium.

“While Raij’s practice focuses on media rights and stadium development deals, the development and construction of Banc of America Stadium [sic] itself saw him take on a different role than usual,” the NLJ reported. “Raij has often worked side-by-side with team owners, but LAFC’s new venue saw him play the role of top executive.”

Raij told the NLJ: “That was a tremendous experience for me from a knowledge base, and I think that’s going to help with my practice for years to come, because it is a little bit different when it is your money and it is personal.”

As the NLJ noted, Raij also owns a stake in the “Oklahoma City Dodgers, an affiliate of MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers, whose $2.15 billion sale in 2012 Raij had a key role in handling.”

Based in New York, Raij has extensive experience advising clients on a wide range of sports business issues, on both the professional and the collegiate levels. He has represented owners and acquirers of professional sports teams, leagues, universities, and state governments. His experience includes matters related to MLB, MiLB, MLS, NBA, NHL, NFL, and EPL, along with major colleges and universities.
