O’Melveny partner Eric Rothenberg and associate Remi Moncel co-authored the article “Paris Agreement Progress from World’s Largest GHG Emitters” published September 15, 2016, in Law360

In a major milestone for global efforts to deal with climate change, the United States and China, the world’s two largest emitters of greenhouse gases, joined the Paris agreement in September 2016. The agreement, reached in December 2015 and signed by 180 countries, obliges all parties to take action to decrease greenhouse emissions.

The authors discuss what the agreement requires of the world’s two largest economies and what they are doing to meet those requirements.

“With the US and China now parties to the Paris agreement, the new treaty will almost certainly enter into force. Both countries have taken significant steps domestically to reduce their respective greenhouse gas emissions in the coming decades,” the authors conclude.

Rothenberg resides in O’Melveny’s New York office and leads the firm’s Environmental Practice. He represents business and financial institutions in a broad range of adversarial matters, including superfund proceedings, toxic tort claims, and private cost recovery actions. Moncel’s practice includes corporate investigations, antitrust, international litigation, and energy and environment.
