O’Melveny Profiled as an Entertainment & Media Group of the Year by Law360January 31, 2014
O’Melveny & Myers’ Entertainment, Sports, and Media Practice was recognized in Law360 as an Entertainment & Media Group of the Year in a January 30, 2014, feature.
“O'Melveny has a deep bench that enables it to continually attract marquee clients,” the publication wrote, noting that the practice handles both litigation and transactions matters for clients in the media, entertainment, and sports industries.
The article details a number of the practice’s notable litigation wins in 2013, including its successful representation of Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) in the high-profile wrongful-death suit brought by Michael Jackson’s family, which the publication calls “arguably the most publicized trial in the US last year.” The feature quotes partner Marvin Putnam, who served as lead attorney for AEG in the case. "The O'Melveny team adopted a very aggressive legal strategy aimed at cutting plaintiffs' case down to size," he told the publication, adding that “this slicing enabled O'Melveny to narrow the case to a very specific claim that, in the end, plaintiffs simply could not prove.”
Law360 also noted some of the headline-making deals handled by the practice, including its work for Guggenheim Digital Media in connection with the launch of SportsNet LA, a new regional sports network for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the International Olympic Committee in its 28-year arrangement with the US Olympic Committee for broadcast privileges and rights to archive footage of the Olympic Games through 2040, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association on matters related to the annual Golden Globe Awards.
The article quotes partners Daniel Petrocelli, chair of O'Melveny's Business Trial and Litigation Practice, and Joe Calabrese, chair of the Entertainment, Sports, and Media Practice, regarding the strength of the Firm’s entertainment group. "The practice doesn't grow by plan; it grows when more clients come to us … and folks are coming to us more and more,” Petrocelli said in the article. "What contributes to our success… is the extraordinary teamwork and collaboration that the firm has within and between the transaction group and the litigation group," Calabrese told Law360. "The synergy helps to really make our practice stand out. It's a very committed group of really terrific lawyers, especially some of the younger partners we have who are up and coming."
Putnam and Petrocelli reside in O’Melveny’s Century City office and Calabrese splits his time between the Firm’s Century City and Los Angeles offices.
