O’Melveny Team Contributes Chapter to ‘Serious Economic Crime’ Book

January 11, 2012 O’Melveny & Myers partner Greta Lichtenbaum, counsel James Barratt, and associate Hayley Ichilcik contributed a chapter to the book entitled, “Serious Economic Crime,” which was recently published in association with the UK’s Serious Fraud Office.  The chapter—entitled “Economic Sanctions Laws: the European Union and the United States”— analyzes the response of the European Union and the United States to recent political developments in places such as Libya, Syria, and Iran, and discusses the resulting sanctions on various regimes, as well as the sanctions’ implications for global businesses. Other sanctions regimes covered by the chapter include those imposed by the European Union and the United States in relation to Myanmar/Burma, North Korea, Sudan, and Cuba. The chapter also provides insight into enforcement regimes in Europe and the United States, and highlights examples of recent enforcement efforts in both regions that have resulted in the forfeiture of billions of dollars by various financial institutions, as well as significant fines.
