O'Melveny's Antitrust Practice Named a Law360 Competition Group of the Year

January 13, 2012 Citing high-stakes litigation victores for clients Hynix Semiconductor Inc., eBay Inc., Asiana Airlines Inc., and Honeywell last year, Law360 named O'Melveny & Myers LLP to its list of top Competition Groups of 2011.

In a January 11, 2012, story, titled "Competition Group Of The Year: O'Melveny & Myers," the online legal newsletter called the win for Hynix "[o]ne of the group's biggest triumphs." In the matter, a jury rejected charges by a Hynix competitor that the company had conspired to prevent its computer memory technology from becoming the industry standard. Hynix potentially faced multi-billion-dollar damages in the case.

For client Asiana, Law360 wrote, "O'Melveny attorneys convinced the [Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals] to affirm a lower court’s dismissal of hundreds of millions of dollars in antitrust claims brought by indirect purchasers under state law. The newsletter described the win for eBay this way: "Another high-profile Ninth Circuit victory came down the following month as the court affirmed another dismissal, this time for O'Melveny client eBay in a putative class action that alleged the online auction site and its PayPal unit had abused their market dominance to overcharge sellers."

"We are not the largest group, but we are very careful in who we hire and I believe we have some very, very good people," Antitrust and Competition Practice Group Leader Richard Parker told Law360. "I don't like to overstaff cases or overstaff the group. We believe in a modified version of the Marines theory known as a few good men and women."
