O’Melveny’s Brearton Featured in Law360

October 05, 2011 O’Melveny & Myers' Century City partner Christopher Brearton, managing partner of O’Melveny’s Century City office and a member of the Entertainment, Sports and Media Practice, was recently profiled in the October 4, 2011 Law360 article “Q&A With O’Melveny’s Chris Brearton.” In the feature, Brearton weighed in on subject matter ranging from the most challenging deal he has encountered, to how the industry is changing in current economic conditions to lessons learned as a young lawyer.

In his profile, Brearton detailed a media rights agreement between O’Melveny client Univision Communications Inc. and Group Televisa, which established one of the most significant licensing agreements by a US broadcaster. “The transaction was even more challenging as over the course of the multiyear negotiation, the deal parties were simultaneously engaged in numerous lawsuits, many of which actually went to trial during the negotiations,” Brearton said in the article. “The constant presence of litigators in the discussion certainly had an impact on the deal-making process.”

Brearton also discussed the changing nature of the entertainment industry and the need for motion picture studios to rethink how they release content to viewers. He is watching a legal battle between Time Warner Cable Inc. and Viacom Inc. that will raise the issue of content rights on iPads and other mobile devices.
