Hacker Discusses Role of O’Melveny’s Harvard Law School Clinic in Case that Could Head to High Court

March 05, 2012 O’Melveny & Myers LLP partner and Supreme Court and Appellate Practice head Jonathan Hacker is quoted in the March 5, 2012, Daily Journal article, “High court could weigh in on a California-Nevada spat.”

In Oakland v. Desert Outdoor Advertising, a California state court awarded the City of Oakland nearly US$500,000 in a dispute with a Nevada-incorporated company that violated the city’s billboard ordinance but was unable to collect after Desert Outdoor Advertising Inc. folded its California operations. The city pursued the company in Nevada, but the state’s Supreme Court ruled that its courts don't have to enforce the California judgment. The US Supreme Court is expected to announce soon whether it will take up the case.

O’Melveny’s Harvard Law School advocacy clinic is teaming up with another firm-run clinic at Harvard to assist Desert Outdoor Advertising. The firm recently hosted clinic students in its Washington, DC office to work on the client's opposition brief, Hacker said.
