O’Melveny’s Kassinger Quoted in Law360 on the Sale of Smithfield Foods Inc. and CFIUS

September 10, 2013 O’Melveny & Myers partner Ted Kassinger was quoted in a September 9, 2013, Law360 article, titled “Dealmakers Buoyed As CFIUS Separates Pork From Nukes.”  The article focuses on the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US’s (CFIUS) approval of the acquisition of Virginia-based pork producer, Smithfield Foods Inc., by Chinese buyer Shanghui International Holdings Ltd.  The approval of this sale proves the increased jurisdiction the Committee now holds.  “CFIUS appears to be doing a good job of sorting out what’s really important from what’s not,” Kassinger said in the article.  Experts agree, saying that “CFIUS has done a good job tuning out political noise and focusing on key issues.”  Kassinger told Law360 that the ruling is “good news” all around, as the outcome suggests “a fair, level-headed review process” that should encourage more activity from Chinese buyers.
