O’Melveny’s Qiang Quoted in Financial Times on Shanghai’s Free-Trade Zone

May 14, 2014

O’Melveny & Myers partner Li Qiang was quoted in a Financial Times article, titled “Benefits of Shanghai Free-Trade Zone Still Shrouded in Mystery.” The May 14, 2014 article discusses the unclear benefits of the Shanghai free-trade zone (FTZ) since its creation in September 2013. While the early days of the FTZ were busy with company registrations, people are now wondering what can be done in the zone that cannot be done elsewhere in China, according to the article. Qiang said the newness of the Shanghai FTZ concept is holding it back as the government is still assessing its options. “It’s not well defined at this point,” Qiang said. “Right now they are delivering some goodies but it’s not something that’s terribly transformational.” Although the benefits of the new FTZ are still uncertain, the article points out that many are optimistic about its potential.
