O’Melveny’s Role in Warner Bros. Settlement in Long-Running ‘Lord of the Rings’ Dispute Noted in Law360

July 03, 2017

Law360’s July 3, 2017, article “Warner Bros., Tolkien Estate Settle US$80M ‘Hobbit’ IP Row” details the US$80 million copyright settlement between O’Melveny client Warner Bros. and the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien in a decades-old dispute around a merchandising agreement for “Lord of the Rings” material.

The dispute had been winding its way through the courts, with the Ninth Circuit ruling against the estate in a three-page memorandum in October 2015, agreeing with the lower court that the allegations weren’t a meritless retaliation, according to the article.

Warner Bros. is represented by O’Melveny partner and Trial Practice Chair Daniel Petrocelli.
