O’Melveny’s Virjee Comments on Sports Team Labor Negotiations in Law360January 14, 2013
O’Melveny & Myers LLP partner Framroze Virjee commented on sports team labor negotiations for the January 11, 2013, Law360 article “Sports Owners Hold All The Cards In Labor Negotiations.” According to the article, the most recent collective bargaining agreements reached in the National Football League, National Basketball Association, and National Hockey League reveal the significant leverage team owners in US sports leagues have over players in labor negotiations.
As an example of how players' unions and team owners could engage during the life of the current agreements rather than wait for them to expire to begin contentious talks, Virjee suggested a joint working group between NHL players and owners to proactively work on issues like digital media and television contracts, which are likely to be at the forefront when the current agreement expires in 2022.
