O’Melveny’s Women’s Leadership Academy Highlighted in Inside Counsel

October 14, 2014

Inside Counsel highlighted O’Melveny & Myers’ 2014 Women’s Leadership Academy (WLA) in its October 14, 2014 issue. The WLA brought together roughly 180 female lawyers from the Firm and clients for a series of workshops led by recognized leadership development professionals.

O’Melveny partner Susan van Keulen chaired the WLA planning committee. She spoke to Inside Counsel about the goals for the WLA and the specific skills practiced in the workshops, which included asserting or adapting personal leadership behavioral styles to increase influence and effectiveness; using language and conversation to improve effectiveness and increase buy-in; focusing on the active choices women need to make to remain resilient and effective; and the skill of moving from being reactionary to being visionary. “Everyone can benefit from being more effective in leadership,” van Keulen said. “We really did touch on some important skills” that can help women advance, she told the publication.

As van Keulen discusses in the article, the Firm also saw the WLA as a great opportunity to share a growth and development path with the Firm's clients in way that helps both organizations be more effective. "It was really energizing to be around other female professionals who are interested in developing their own leadership and management skills," Christine A. Nixon, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the Firm’s client AIG Life and Retirement, said in the article. "These are not skills one learns in law school.”
