Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Trial date set for historic Pa. school funding lawsuit

Seven years after a lawsuit was filed in Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court alleging inadequacies in educational funding for the Keystone State’s poorest districts, which receive almost $5,000 less per student from the state than wealthy districts, the case will finally go to trial in September, this article reported. O’Melveny is representing litigants—school districts, parents, and educational organizations—alongside the Education Law Center and the Public Interest Law Center. 

“It has been a long road to get here,” said a representative of the Public Interest Law Center, “but we are ready for the first trial in Pennsylvania’s history to challenge the Legislature’s failure to meet their constitutional duty to adequately prepare our state’s children.” In order to ensure all students receive an education meeting the state’s standards, plaintiffs’ research shows that $4.6 billion in additional funding is required.
