Ron Cheng Discusses China’s Plan to Bolster Legal Teams at State-Owned Enterprises in MLex

June 21, 2016

O’Melveny partner Ron Cheng was quoted in the article, “China To Strengthen Legal Teams of State-Owned Enterprises,” in the June 21, 2016 issue of MLex. The article discusses the Chinese government’s plan to boost the legal capabilities and standards of state-owned enterprises.

“The announcement encourages the placement of legal advisors in state-owned enterprises under a number of conditions related to the Chinese domestic situation,” Cheng told the publication. “As this policy is implemented, and as these SOEs expand their dealings with multinational companies and do business with overseas partners, these partners will expect these SOE [legal] advisors to respond to the same concerns — including anti-bribery and corruption compliance, intellectual property protection issues, and resolution of disputes — with the same legal professional training and skills as their business partners. SOEs and their [legal] advisors should be prepared to do so.”

Based in both Hong Kong and Los Angeles, Cheng handles both anti-corruption and data privacy matters.
