BuzzFeed News: Sen. Chuck Schumer Raises Security Concerns About The Army Using TikTok To Try To Recruit Young People

Data Security & Privacy counsel John Dermody is quoted in this BuzzFeed News article, which discusses Senator Chuck Schumer’s security-related concerns around the US Army using Chinese-owned social media app TikTok for recruiting.

“I think that what this does reflect is the national security community’s concern for data sources — not just data related to plans for the F35 or Department of Defense secret personnel data, but also personal data where there is a lot of it and the ability to analyze it is increasing,” Dermody said. “If you can identify networks of individuals or connections, then it can have a direct impact on national security concerns.”

John Dermody joined O’Melveny after a decade in government service, recently serving as a deputy legal advisor at the National Security Council (NSC). Previously, John served in the General Counsel’s offices of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Defense.
