SportBusiness.com: AGA Survey Says US$6bn Bet on Super Bowl

February 04, 2019

The American Gaming Association estimates that Americans bet US$6 billion on the 2019 Super Bowl, over $1 billion more than 2018. Following the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, states can legalize sports gambling. “To make a legal bet, you have to be in one of the seven states, or the District of Columbia, where gambling has already been legalized,” says co-chair of O’Melveny’s Sports Industry Group Irwin Raij.

Raij predicts that up to twelve more states will legalize sports betting in 2019. He cites that states with legalized sports betting “are already seeing sizable tax revenue gains in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision last year,” he added. “Super Bowl Sunday should add a healthy inflow to these state coffers and we can expect others to pass their own betting laws to try and take advantage of this potential new tax revenue stream.”
