The Hill: LGBTQ+ Rights Groups Defend California Policy Protecting Transgender Inmates

Three LGBTQ+ organizations—Lambda Legal, the Transgender Law Center (TLC), and the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Southern California (ACLU SoCal)—filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit challenging California’s “Transgender Respect, Agency, and Dignity Act,” which protects transgender people incarcerated in the state. The law requires California’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) to acknowledge an inmate’s self-reported gender identity. O’Melveny & Myers LLP and the three organizations represent the Transgender Gender-Variant and Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP) and four incarcerated transgender women in the state.
