The Business Journals/BizWomen: What advice would you give to a new mentor?

February 24, 2020

O’Melveny counsel Kendall Turner was the subject of a profile in Business Journals’ “Mentoring Monday” feature. When asked what advice she would give to new mentors, Turner said: “Giving someone work is not the same thing as being a mentor, nor is simply taking someone out for coffee. A good mentoring relationship is one that provides meaningful benefits for both people.” She continued: “For example, the mentee can be one of the few people able to tell the mentor hard truths. Or the mentee can help the mentor pursue opportunities the mentor otherwise lacks bandwidth to pursue. And the mentor can give the mentee opportunities she might not otherwise have. The more substantive the opportunities, the better, both for the mentee and the mentor.”
