WJLA-TV (ABC 7 - Washington, DC): Veterans Send Backpacks with Toys and School Supplies to Kids in AfghanistanDecember 15, 2018
In its December 14th broadcast, WJLA-TV (ABC 7 - Washington, DC) featured an O'Melveny-led initiative to supply one thousand backpacks filled with toys and school supplies to children in the combat zone in Afghanistan, dubbed "Mission Backpack: Afghanistan."
The featured service project of the 2018 Veterans Initiative Summit, the initiative brought leading private equity firms Apollo, Blackstone, FedEx, KKR, and The Carlyle Group together with O'Melveny and the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes. The organizations joined forces to supply backpacks filled with notebooks, pencil sets, erasers to Afghani children, who are not permitted to attend school without supplies. More than 1,000 donated toys and stuffed animals also made their way into the packs. The filled backpacks were later shipped—at no charge—by FedEx from O’Melveny to Fort Campbell, to await delivery in Bagram, Afghanistan by US troops from the 101st Airborne’s “Sustainment Brigade.”
The segment includes interviews with Gen. Petraeus and O'Melveny partner Bryan Boyle, who discuss the project’s scope and goals.
