SAN FRANCISCO -- May 29, 2015 -- O’Melveny & Myers LLP continued its longstanding tradition of awarding college scholarships to students at San Francisco’s Balboa High School on Wednesday at the school’s 2015 graduation ceremony.

Located in San Francisco’s Excelsior District, Balboa High School has historically educated a greater proportion of the city’s underserved and ethnically diverse students relative to other high schools in the city. Since 2006, O’Melveny’s San Francisco office has selected three high-achieving 10th grade students from Balboa High each year; one O’Melveny Scholar and two finalists. The Firm’s pledge to the students is that if they stay in school, graduate, and go to college, the O’Melveny Scholar will receive US$20,000 and the finalists will each receive US$1,000 to help pay for school-related expenses. The program also has a mentoring component through which the students receive one-on-one support and encouragement from O’Melveny lawyers.

The Firm congratulates 2015 O’Melveny Scholar Seuiolotoi “Seu” Ufau, and finalists Omar Estanislao and Wendy Zhou.

“Fostering the next generation of young, motivated leaders is one of the most important ways we can give back to our communities,” said O’Melveny associate Herman Cheung, who was on hand to help present the awards along with associate Adam Kaplan and assistant Karla Quintanilla. “These exceptional students have bright futures and we are thrilled to be able to support them on their journey.”

An honor roll student with perfect attendance, Seu’s commitment to her studies and community is matched only by her love of sports—particularly basketball—and animals. She participates in several sports at Balboa in addition to a heavy course load. Seu is known as a passionate advocate for social change on issues such as inequality in the educational system. Also an active community volunteer, she has led food drives and fundraisers at Balboa and her church. Seu plans to attend college and pursue a career as a veterinarian and to use sports to motivate young people to stay in school and reach their full potential.

O’Melveny’s San Francisco scholarship program enjoys a 100% success rate; to date, every Balboa student selected to receive an O’Melveny scholarship has graduated from high school and gone on to attend college. O’Melveny Scholars have attended universities such as Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, and San Francisco State.
