O’Melveny Counsel John Dermody Named To 2020 Irish Legal 100

NEW YORK—November 17, 2020—O’Melveny Washington, DC counsel John Dermody has been named to the 2020 Irish Legal 100, an annual compilation of the most distinguished legal professionals in the United States with Irish ancestry.

Founded in 2008 by the Irish Voice newspaper in New York, the Irish Legal 100 recognizes top attorneys, legal scholars, and members of the judiciary, including Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and former Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Dermody is counsel in O’Melveny’s Data Security & Privacy group, where he helps clients prepare for and respond to the serious legal and financial risks posed by evolving data protection and privacy obligations. Dermody advises clients on data security, privacy, cybersecurity, and national security issues, including economic sanctions and national security reviews of investments and technology transactions conducted by the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, Defense, the Treasury, State, and Commerce.

As a member of O’Melveny’s Coronavirus Task Force, Dermody also advises clients on government emergency powers, shelter-in-place orders, and data privacy issues associated with public health measures.

Dermody joined O’Melveny after a decade in US government service, having served as a Deputy Legal Advisor at the National Security Council, and in the General Counsel’s offices of the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense.

With great grandparents hailing from Clare, Galway, Roscommon, and Cavan, Dermody’s Irish roots run deep. He has worked at the United States Embassy in Dublin, the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland, and as basketball coach at an elementary school in Belfast. John has an MPhil in Irish Literature from Trinity College, Dublin and an MA in International Politics from Queen’s University, Belfast.
