LOS ANGELES, CA ─ Former US Secretary of State and O’Melveny & Myers LLP Senior Partner Warren Christopher will recognize eight promising 10th grade students each with a US$20,000 scholarship at an awards reception on Friday, June 19 at the Los Angeles Central Library. The scholarship winners are selected from student nominated by 50 LAUSD high schools.

Since the Warren Christopher Scholarship program’s inception in 1992, the program has awarded scholarships to more than 119 outstanding students who have overcome serious economic barriers and personal hardships. Christopher Scholars have gone on to receive degrees from prestigious universities including Yale, MIT, Brown, Duke, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, and UCLA.

While most scholarships are customarily awarded to students in their senior year of high school, the Christopher Scholarship program is unique in that it grants scholarships to rising academic stars during their sophomore year with the hope that the achievement will motivate them to excel throughout high school and into college. The WCS is a commitment between the students and the Firm and supports the student throughout their undergraduate studies.

“It is a great privilege for us, to be able to provide these scholarships to encourage these young people to finish high school and pursue their dreams in college,” Christopher said.

From careers in education and medicine to politics and community activism, Christopher Scholars have gone on to make valuable contributions to their communities and the world. All previous scholarship recipients are invited to gather together for the awards reception.

About the Warren Christopher Scholarship

The Warren Christopher Scholarship (WCS) is a partnership between O’Melveny and Myers, the Christopher family, LAUSD, and CCF that was created in honor of the former Secretary of State. After graduating from Hollywood High School, Mr. Christopher relied on financial assistance from scholarship awards to pursue a post-secondary education. The WCS aspires to motivate and inspire young adults who have shown great leadership by overcoming adversity in Los Angeles.
