O’Melveny Hosts Women in IP Network’s Inaugural Meeting
November 02, 2017FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York, NY—November 2, 2017—More than 150 women IP lawyers participated in the inaugural meeting of the newly formed WIN: Women in IP Network yesterday. The meeting, which featured the panel discussion, “Persuasion and Power,” was held at O’Melveny’s New York office.
Created by women IP lawyers for women IP lawyers, WIN is intended to serve as a professional resource for its members, a place to network, enhance skills and provide support to other women, junior and senior, working in intellectual property. Founding members hail from industry, including technology companies, pharmaceutical companies, and communications companies, and law firms.
Co-founder Lisa Pensabene, head of O’Melveny’s Life Science Litigation practice, said that the group fills an important need in a practice area with few women, especially at the upper ranks of the profession.
“As each individual woman succeeds, all women will succeed and diversity in IP will rise,” Pensabene said in her introduction. “After all, a rising tide lifts all boats. This group is a personal, positive, professional network to help women in IP succeed, one woman at a time.”
Co-founder Lisa Jakob, legal director, IP litigation, Merck, said, “We each have ideas and experience and we want to share them. We want to go forward together because together we are stronger, together we are better, together we will rise up and together we will WIN.”
This was intended to be the first of many productive meetings of this important group. The panel discussion, which explored persuasion and persuasive power, was moderated by communications expert and law professor Barbara Ashcroft. The panel featured The Honorable Esther Salas, United States District Judge for the District of New Jersey; Dr. Douglas Fambrough, CEO of Dicerna Pharmaceuticals and venture capitalist; Dr. Jeremy Levin, CEO of Ovid Therapeutics Inc.; and Administrative Patent Judge Julie Heaney, United States Patent & Trademark Office. The panel was followed by a reception.
