CENTURY CITY, CA ─ April 15, 2015 ─ O’Melveny & Myers LLP is pleased to announce that partners Dan Petrocelli and Bruce Tobey were selected for Variety’s 2015 Legal Impact Report spotlighting the top in-house attorneys, litigators and transactional lawyers in entertainment. Additionally, counsel Silvia Vannini was featured in the publication's "Up Next" section, which recognizes rising entertainment lawyers. The Century City-based lawyers were profiled in the publication’s special report published April 14, 2015.
Petrocelli, who chairs O'Melveny's Trial Practice, was noted for his high-profile representation of Top Rank Promotions and boxing superstar Manny Pacquaio in connection with the agreement for the highly anticipated bout between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. He also was recognized for securing a complete dismissal of a federal class action lawsuit against several clients related to the long running hit television show “American Idol.” The suit was brought by 10 former contestants who alleged they were disqualified from the show on account of racial discrimination toward African-American males. The federal court in the Southern District of New York granted the motion to dismiss the case in its entirety.
Tobey, the transactional co-head of the Firm’s Entertainment, Sports and Media Practice, was recognized as a force behind some of the industry’s most significant cross-border deals, including Lionsgate’s US$1.5 billion co-production agreement with China’s Hunan TV. “It was tremendous to actually get something meaningful done,” Tobey told Variety. “There have been a number of (other people’s) deals that have ended short of the finish line for reasons caused by both sides of the transaction.”
Vannini’s profile notes that she advised Starz in its international joint venture to create an entertainment platform to be launched as Starz Play in the Middle East and North Africa; advised MGM in its acquisition of a majority interest in Mark Burnett’s One Three Media and LightWorkers Media; and represented Legendary Entertainment in its acquisition of Asylum Entertainment. The piece quotes Beth Lemberger, Executive Vice President for Business Affairs at Focus Features, who said that Vannini’s “keen balance of business need and legal risk is an asset to every transaction.”
