O’Melveny Partner Amy Laurendeau Named to Daily Journal’s 2023 List of “Top Women Lawyers”

NEWPORT BEACH—June 21, 2023—The Daily Journal has named O’Melveny partner Amy Laurendeau to its 2023 list of “Top Women Lawyers,” which recognizes the top performing women lawyers in California.

Laurendeau, who serves as Managing Partner of O’Melveny’s Newport Beach office and is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee, was recognized for her work successfully representing Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries in opioid litigation, including:

• securing dismissal of claims brought by a group of Maine hospitals over marketing of opioids in the state;
• defending J&J in opioid litigation brought by West Virginia that resulted in a US$99 million settlement during the third week of trial.

Laurendeau also defended J&J against claims that the company’s product Motrin causes a rare, serious rash, and ultimately won a motion to dismiss the case, which began in 2008. “There was just a long record of plaintiff’s counsel trying to delay the case rather than diligently moving the case toward trial,” Laurendeau said. “We had several strong defenses and were prepared [to win the case at trial]. … But a complete dismissal defense win for our client is obviously a great result however it comes.”

Additionally, Laurendeau served as a faculty member in J&J’s Pathways Trial Academy & Fellowship Program, an intensive trial advocacy training program for young attorneys aimed to help J&J “increase the diversity of their outside trial counsel and also help some of these very talented, young, diverse lawyers make the transition to become first chair trial lawyers,” she said.
