NEW YORK, NEW YORK ─ O’Melveny & Myers LLP announced that its Entertainment, Media, and Sports Practice received Chambers and Partners’ highest recognition at the annual Chambers USA Awards for Excellence ceremony, held on June 11 in New York City. Chambers also honored O’Melveny’s Asia Practice Chair Howard Chao with its “Outstanding Contributions to the Legal Profession” award, recognizing him among a select number of individuals who stand out in the marketplace as leaders in their field.
“The Chambers Awards for Excellence and Outstanding Contributions are among the highest honors a firm can receive and we’re gratified that O’Melveny & Myers has been judged worthy of these two high-profile awards,” said Arthur B. Culvahouse, Jr., Chair of the Firm. “This impressive accomplishment is a testament to the surpassing dedication, talent, and skill that Howard and our Entertainment and Media team consistently bring to their work.”
It’s noteworthy that for a second consecutive year, the Firm’s well-respected and long-established Entertainment, Media, and Sports Practice prevailed over more than a half-dozen other leading firms to earn an Award of Excellence in Media. Chambers’ Media category is multi-disciplinary, covering both transactional and adversarial work. The evaluation process began with a submission compiled by O’Melveny's Entertainment, Media, and Sports partners highlighting the high-profile transactional and litigation work the practice handled for a stellar roster of clients over the past year.
The Media group was honored for among other litigation successes, the highly publicized representation of Bristol Bay Productions (formerly known as Crusader Entertainment) in a lawsuit over the movie adaptation rights of “Sahara”, and various other entertainment, convergence, and videogame industry matters for clients such as Paramount Pictures and Viacom. The Entertainment, Media, and Sports transactions team distinguished itself again this year doing significant deals like the 14,000 screen US digital cinema rollout for Digital Cinema Implementation Partners (DCIP), while also completing significant deals for clients such as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Lionsgate Entertainment, Participant Media, the MLB San Diego Padres, the International Olympic Committee, Sony Entertainment, Shine Group, and Alcon Entertainment. “Being nominated by Chambers a few years in a row is honor enough, but to repeat our win a second time is truly amazing and gratifying. I am so lucky to work with such a group of talented lawyers,” said partner and Entertainment, Media, and Sports Practice Chair Joseph Calabrese, who accepted the 2009 Award for Excellence in the Media category on behalf of the Firm.
Each year, through extensive research conducted by Chambers USA, the guide recognizes the achievements of a select number of individuals who stand out in the marketplace as leaders in their field. In recognizing Chao for his outstanding contributions to the legal profession, Chambers USA stated, “He is the architect of O’Melveny's robust platform in Asia and has established a ‘gold standard’ practice in outbound Chinese investment transactions. Working out of the Firm's offices in Silicon Valley and Beijing, Howard Chao is no less renowned for advising multinational companies on their investments and market strategies in China. His expertise and success have earned him a reputation as one of the best cross-border M&A lawyers in practice.” In accepting the award, the founder of O’Melveny's market-leading China Practice said, “This is a tremendous honor, particularly coming from Chambers, which itself has made such an outstanding contribution to the legal community.” He further noted, “What we have been able to accomplish in Asia is as much a credit to our Firm as to any individual. The quality of what we have built together is a testament to the vision and core values of our partnership.”
Partner and co-chair of the Firm’s Antitrust/Competition Practice, and former Director of the Bureau of Competition at the Federal Trade Commission, Richard Parker, was a Chambers USA finalist for an Award for Excellence in recognition of his work in many major antitrust representations, including criminal, merger, government, and civil investigations, as well as class action litigation.
