O’Melveny Recognized for Outstanding Community Service by the Legal Aid Society of Orange County

October 21, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEWPORT BEACH, CA─October 21, 2016─O’Melveny received the Outstanding Community Service Award at the Legal Aid Society of Orange County's Voices for Justice Dinner & Fundraiser, held last night in Newport Beach.  Now in its third year, the event supports LASOC's mission to provide free legal aid services to the Orange County community’s most vulnerable members.

O'Melveny was recognized for its work with LASOC’s Elder Abuse Clinic at the Orange County Superior Court’s Central Justice Center. In 2014, Judge Kim Hubbard called for a special justice center to meet the needs of unrepresented elder abuse victims seeking legal assistance.  Under the leadership of Judge Hubbard, LASOC clinic coordinator Melanie Vilet; Anna Davis, Director of Public Interest Programs at UCI School of Law; and O’Melveny partner Brett Williamson, the clinic was launched that same year.

Through the clinic, UCI students and O’Melveny lawyers come together weekly to conduct intake interviews and provide information to petitioners.  The at-risk Orange County residents who have found help at the clinic include a 92-year-old man who had over $100,000 taken from his account, an elderly couple seeking protection against an alcohol and drug abusing granddaughter, and a 95-year-old man who was a victim of neglect and theft by his caretaker.

Along with giving the firm's lawyers the opportunity to make meaningful and lasting contributions to the lives of individuals in their community, the clinic provides a hands-on training and development experience for the law students who will serve as the next generation of lawyer-citizens using their skills to help those in need.

“We feel so fortunate for this opportunity to partner with such terrific organizations to address the needs of a vulnerable and growing population within our community," said O'Melveny counsel Ashley Pavel, who accepted the award on the firm's behalf.

"O’Melveny’s commitment to serving underrepresented members of our community is admirable and commendable, and we are honored to present the firm with this year’s Outstanding Community Service Award," the LASOC said.
