WASHINGTON, DC — O’Melveny & Myers LLP’s Brian P. Brooks, managing partner of the firm’s Washington, DC office, will be part of a live webinar on May 14 on the financial meltdown hosted by FinReg21.com, a newly launched online resource of commentary and news on financial regulatory reform.
Brooks is a leading authority on subprime mortgage issues. As the leader of O’Melveny’s Financial Services Industry Group, his practice focuses on complex financial services litigation and regulatory matters, including class actions and state and federal enforcement actions. Brooks represents banks, investment firms, insurance companies, and diversified financial services companies. He has testified, written, and lectured on issues relating to the financial crisis before federal government agencies, think tanks, and industry audiences.
The webinar features Judge Richard A. Posner of the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit who will lead a discussion about the causes of the US financial crisis. Posner’s book, A Failure of Capitalism: The Crisis of ’08 and the Descent into Depression, will be released on May 15 by Harvard University Press. Judge Posner will then be joined by Brooks and Dr. Robert E. Litan of the Brookings Institution and the Kauffman Foundation for a roundtable discussion about whether capitalism has failed the financial system and if regulation is part of the solution to the nation’s economic and market challenges. David S. Evans, noted economist, a FinReg21.com founder and the site’s editor-in-chief, will moderate.
“Judge Posner’s new book raises provocative questions about the causes of the financial crisis, and proposes solutions that will be surprising for many of his long-time admirers,” said Brooks. “Our roundtable discussion should be of interest to bankers, lawyers, and policymakers concerned about the future regulation – and overregulation – of our financial markets. The question is nothing less than the future availability of market-priced credit in America.”
