LOS ANGELES ─ APRIL 23, 2012 ─ O’Melveny & Myers LLP’s Matthew Close, a partner in the Firm’s Securities Litigation Practice, has been chosen for a “2012 Distinguished Legal Writing Award”  by the Burton Awards for Legal Achievement, which is run in conjunction with the Library of Congress. The group holds an annual contest to recognize the best legal writing from the nation’s top 1,000 law firms.

“We are extremely proud of Matt’s achievement,” said Jeffrey Kilduff, chair of O’Melveny’s Securities Litigation Practice. “He embraces the philosophy of providing the best possible legal counsel to clients by staying abreast of topics that affect both his practice area and the global legal stage.”

Close authored a piece for Bloomberg Law forecasting that the trend of class action lawsuits against US-listed Chinese companies appeared poised to spread into the Canadian legal system--a prediction that proved accurate as Chinese companies faced increased scrutiny and multiple lawsuits in Canada. Close also is a member of O’Melveny’s dedicated task force that leverages the Firm’s global platform to provide integrated legal services to Chinese companies that are facing or could face this type of litigation. O’Melveny is currently handling numerous matters for China-based clients in various stages of public offerings and litigation arising from their status as US-listed public companies.

“I am honored to receive this prestigious recognition from such a well-respected group,” Close said. “Identifying legal trends before they affect our clients is a priority of the Firm and the Burton Awards provide another platform for us to highlight potentially critical issues and best serve our clients.”

Close is one of 35 winners that will be honored at the June 11, 2012, gala at the Jefferson Building in the Library of Congress. Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens will speak at the event. This marks the 13th year for the nonprofit program. The Burton Awards program was established to honor the finest law firm and law school authors and has since expanded into other major achievements in law.
