O'Melveny's Rochelle Karr Receives Workforce’s 2013 Game Changers Award

NEWPORT BEACH, CA - September 10, 2013 - Rochelle Karr, O’Melveny & Myers LLP's Director of Attorney Professional Development and Alumni Relations, has received Workforce’s 2013 Game Changers Award. The annual competition recognizes a select group of “young, dynamic HR thought leaders and practitioners who are helping to reshape people management strategies around the globe.” Karr was profiled in a special Game Changers feature in the August 2013 print edition of Workforce Management magazine.
In the profile, Workforce highlights Karr’s mantra, “You never know unless you try,” and notes that her skeptical eye and willingness to challenge deep-rooted norms has led to accomplishments that include transforming the Firm’s work-life balance and integration through the flexible job-share and sabbatical program CustOMMize, creating a more balanced formal work assignment system that benefited diverse attorneys and employees returning from leave, and revamping the Firm’s formal coaching and mentoring programs.
“As a former O’Melveny lawyer, I like to think I have changed the status quo at O’Melveny by understanding the firm from both the associates’ perspective as well as from firm management’s perspective,” Karr told the publication. “At the end of the day, the interests of the associates and firm management overlap quite a bit, and by being able to spot those intersections, I think I have been in a unique position to effectively drive change.”
Workforce also noted Karr’s efforts to create a more inclusive and flexible work environment for parents and the Firm’s alumni, which include implementing new-parent transition coaching, midcareer attorney mentoring, and OMMConnect, an extensive alumni network that connects current and former firm colleagues.
“Questioning the status quo and exploring ways to make things better not only allows us to distinguish ourselves from the competition, it also gives us an edge when it comes to attracting, retaining and developing our star talent,” Karr said in the article.
